Living life as a former inmate has presented a series of setbacks finding work and resources, which has only increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through organizations like the Greater Gwinnett Reentry Alliance (GGRA), which provides supplies and services to former inmates, and NSPIRE Outreach Atlanta, a nonprofit committed to rehabilitating those dealing with homelessness, addiction, domestic violence, abuse, neglect and more one man has been able to take charge of his addiction and locate resources needed to survive.

GGRA has had a long standing partnership with Dr. Gunay's Software Development class at Georgia Gwinnett College.  This partnership is the foundation for the technology that powers our website and this very newsletter that you are reading today.  

Last year GGRA began working with a team of students to build a better resource portal that would be used to easily locate all GGRA partner organizations.  This easy to use map was launched and demonstrated during our May meeting.   It is a great resource for both returning citizens and reentry organizations.

The film Just Mercy" is free to rent on digital streaming platforms and cable providers throughout the month of  June. Amazon, Hulu, YouTube and others are participating.

Based on a true story, the movie focuses on the life of the civil-rights attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) as he fights to overturn the wrongful murder conviction of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx).  The film is being offered as a resource to help educate people about the dangers of systemic racism.

The Georgia Justice Project Takes a look at the turmoil’s bestowed upon incarcerated and returning citizens during this COVID19 crisis. GJP states "...we want to ensure the rights and well-being of people on probation who may be struggling financially and making a decision of whether or not to put food on the table or keep up with their probation fees".

Currently therapy and counseling sessions are available via Zoom Telehealth. Veterans Court and Mental Health Court are conducted virtually also.  Crisis Stabilization Unit Admissions in Gwinnett are on hold.
